In a significant milestone for public-private collaboration, the Hong Kong Police Force commended Binance, the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchange, for its instrumental role in dismantling a sophisticated criminal syndicate engaged in multi-million-dollar fraud and money laundering schemes involving virtual assets.

Representing Binance, Nils Andersen-Röed, Global Head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), accepted the award and a formal letter of appreciation. The recognition underscores Binance’s commitment to supporting law enforcement in safeguarding the global financial ecosystem.

Breaking Down the Case

Earlier this year, the Hong Kong Police Force carried out a targeted operation against a local criminal network leveraging digital assets for illicit activities. The operation culminated in the arrests of the group’s leader and key members, neutralizing a network responsible for fraud involving millions of Hong Kong dollars.

Binance’s technical expertise and dedicated support proved pivotal to the investigation’s success. The Hong Kong Police emphasized that Binance’s contributions not only enabled swift enforcement but also bolstered trust in public-private partnerships aimed at combating financial crime.

Nils Andersen-Röed remarked:

“We feel deeply honored by this recognition from the Hong Kong Police Force. This operation highlights the critical importance of public-private collaboration in ensuring industry security and fostering trust.”

Expanding Collaborative Efforts

Beyond the operation, Andersen-Röed and Carlos Mak of Binance’s investigations team met with the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) at the Hong Kong Police Headquarters. These discussions focused on strengthening bilateral initiatives to tackle financial and cybercrime while sharing Binance’s experience in global law enforcement collaboration.

Superintendent Hui Yee-wai of the CSTCB acknowledged the growing challenges of the digital era, stating:

“We appreciate Binance’s long-standing support for Hong Kong law enforcement. Public-private partnerships like these are vital in combatting crime and safeguarding the public.”

Binance has also been invited to provide specialized training for various units of the Hong Kong Police Force, including the CSTCB, Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB), and Organized Crime and Triad Bureau (OCTB). This ongoing cooperation demonstrates Binance’s proactive stance in fostering a transparent and secure digital asset ecosystem.

Nils Andersen-Röed concluded:

“At Binance, we will continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies worldwide, upholding the spirit of cooperation to bring offenders to justice and enhance global financial safety.”
