Vitalik Buterin Highlights Centralization Issues in Solana
By Published On: 03/09/2025

The Solana ecosystem is on the cusp of its most transformative upgrade yet: the Alpenglow consensus protocol, set to drastically reduce transaction finality from roughly 12–13 seconds to an unprecedented 150 milliseconds—a near‑100‑fold acceleration.

After a two‑week governance cycle that began on August 21, over 52 % of the network’s stake participated in the vote—surpassing the 33 % quorum threshold necessary for adoption. The outcome was virtually unanimous, with 98.27 % voting “yes”, only 1.05 % opposing, and 0.36 % abstaining.

Alpenglow introduces two pivotal components:

  • Votor, an off‑chain signature aggregation mechanism that replaces Solana’s existing TowerBFT. It allows sub‑second block finality—potentially finalizing in a single round if 80 % of stake is active, or within two rounds at 60 % responsiveness.
  • Rotor, superseding the current proof‑of‑history and Turbine systems. It significantly improves data propagation among validators, enhancing bandwidth efficiency and reducing network latency.

The Solana Foundation emphasized that, with this upgrade, “Solana could realize Web2‑level responsiveness with L1 finality,” opening opportunities for applications that demand both speed and cryptographic certainty.

Additional enhancements include validator economic reforms: a fixed Validator Admission Ticket Fee of 1.6 SOL per epoch, replacing traditional vote transaction fees, along with bonus rewards for validators who aggregate votes and issue finalization certificates. These changes, while improving efficiency, have prompted some concerns regarding increased centralization due to raised entry barriers.

Although implementation timelines are still subject to validation and further proposals—particularly for Rotor—Solana is targeting deployment in 2026. Network contributors remain optimistic, citing the speed gains as transformational for use cases spanning DeFi to blockchain gaming.
