World, formerly known as Worldcoin, has announced the launch of its World ID Orb verification service in Brazil, expanding its global reach for identity verification technology. Beginning November 13, 2024, Brazilians will be able to verify their identities with World ID, following initial pop-up events in the country earlier in 2023 as part of a broader international pilot.

The project, co-founded by Sam Altman, aims to promote “proof-of-human” identity verification in a world increasingly impacted by AI-generated bots and identity fraud. This latest Brazilian launch follows Worldcoin’s recent entries into markets including Costa Rica, Poland, and Austria. The World App, central to the project, has already amassed a user base exceeding 16 million, with over 7.5 million verified individuals worldwide, according to World’s website.

Brazilian users will gain access to World ID 3.0, an advanced version of the technology that supports anonymous identity verification, a key feature as concerns over digital identity and data privacy grow. Worldcoin’s approach to securing identity verification without compromising anonymity has been met with interest amid rising fears around identity theft and deepfakes, highlighted in recent consumer surveys.

Beyond identity verification, World has broadened its ecosystem with the October launch of World Chain, a layer-2 blockchain network built on Ethereum’s Superchain. Developed in partnership with Optimism, Uniswap, Alchemy, and Dune, World Chain is designed to support interoperability across decentralized applications. Through integration with the Across protocol, the network facilitates cross-chain asset transactions, enabling users to bridge popular cryptocurrencies such as ETH, wETH, and USDC.

This expansion of World ID verification and blockchain infrastructure illustrates Worldcoin’s continued commitment to global digital identity solutions, despite regulatory and legal hurdles in various markets. By extending these services to Brazil, Worldcoin seeks to provide a scalable, secure framework for identity verification, responding to the rising demand for reliable digital identity in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
