Where Will Bitcoin Mining Be After the Halving?

Residents of Granbury, Texas, have filed a lawsuit against crypto mining giant Marathon Digital, citing intolerable noise from its local Bitcoin mining facility. Over two dozen residents allege that the constant noise and vibrations from the site have caused severe “discomfort and annoyance,” impacting their health and quality of life.

The lawsuit, filed on October 4 in Hood County Court, claims that the unrelenting noise from Marathon’s Bitcoin mining operations has led to fatigue, headaches, hearing loss, and other health issues for nearby residents. Some individuals have reported worsening of pre-existing conditions, such as high blood pressure, due to the facility’s operations.

In addition to health concerns, the plaintiffs assert that Marathon’s mining activity has led to increased electricity bills and decreased property values. Despite these complaints, Marathon Digital has yet to respond publicly.

The plaintiffs, represented by Earthjustice attorney Rodrigo Cantú, are seeking a permanent injunction to halt Marathon’s noise pollution or shut down the site entirely. The Granbury facility, acquired by Marathon in January 2023, has a hashrate of 4.3 ExaHashs per second and has sparked similar community disputes since its construction.

This legal battle echoes a previous case in Norway, where residents successfully closed a Bitcoin mine over noise concerns.
