The well-known blockchain startup Ripple has donated $100,000 in XRP to help towns in California that have been devastated by wildfires rebuild. The payment, which was made via the bitcoin philanthropy website The Giving Block, highlights the growing significance of digital assets in charity contributions.

Two well-known charity organizations will benefit from the donations: GiveDirectly, which provides direct financial transfers to impacted individuals, and World Central Kitchen, which delivers meals in disaster areas. In order to double the impact of the relief operations, entrepreneur Jared Isaacman has pledged to double Ripple’s donation.

Southern California has seen an especially harsh wildfire season, with strong Santa Ana winds, drought, and low humidity accelerating the spread of fires. Since January 7, The New York Times has reported widespread property damage and the displacement of thousands of residents around the Los Angeles area.

The effort by Ripple is indicative of a larger dedication to using cryptocurrencies for good. Ripple’s digital asset, XRP, is still essential to the advancement of blockchain’s application in charity.
