The Pentagon of the United States has initiated a new task force with the purpose of exploring the potential applications of generative artificial intelligence in the nation’s defense efforts.
On August 10th, an announcement was made by the Pentagon regarding the establishment of “Task Force Lima.” This task force is dedicated to investigating how AI can be seamlessly integrated across various aspects of the U.S. defense infrastructure, enabling the design, implementation, and utilization of generative AI technologies.
According to a statement from the Department of Defense, the overarching objective is to leverage AI in order to enhance operations related to business, health, preparedness, policy, and the capabilities for warfare.
Dr. Kathleen Hicks, the Deputy Secretary of Defense, indicated that part of Task Force Lima’s mission will also encompass researching ways in which the Department can safeguard against and respond to malicious or adversarial applications of AI.
Leading this new task force is the recently established Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), which was launched in June 2022. Heading up Task Force Lima is Captain Manuel Xavier Lugo of the U.S. Navy.
The formation of Task Force Lima comes at a time when tensions between the United States and China regarding AI technology are escalating. On August 9th, President Joe Biden signed an executive order that designated China, along with Hong Kong and Macau, as nations warranting concern. As a result, technological investments in these regions are now subject to regulation and restriction.
These technological investments, particularly crucial for China’s military, intelligence, and cyber capabilities, encompass components like semiconductors that play a pivotal role in the development of AI models.
This executive order builds upon previous measures put in place by Biden in October 2022, which placed limitations on the sale of AI chips to China. Currently, U.S. officials are deliberating the potential implementation of more stringent controls on such sales.
