As Ethereum celebrates its tenth anniversary, the blockchain platform stands at a pivotal crossroads. In an exclusive interview with Cointelegraph, Tomasz Stanczak, Co-Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation, outlined a strategic vision aimed at reinforcing Ethereum’s foundational values while adapting to an increasingly competitive blockchain landscape.

Ethereum Faces Competitive Pressure but Remains Focused

Stanczak addressed rising competition from newer, high-performance blockchains such as Solana and Aptos, which critics claim surpass Ethereum in speed and user experience. In response, he emphasized the Foundation’s commitment to deliberate, long-term development. Rather than react to market noise, Ethereum is doubling down on architectural integrity and core principles like decentralization and neutrality.

Interoperability Between Layers Takes Priority

A central theme of the interview was the evolving dynamic between layer-1 and layer-2 solutions. Stanczak highlighted that Ethereum’s future lies in building seamless interoperability across these layers. The Foundation is currently advancing standards and developer tools to improve integration while safeguarding Ethereum’s base layer.

Staking Incentives and Validator Retention

Stanczak also touched on concerns about validator engagement amid the rise of layer-2 platforms. While institutional players may seek short-term returns, Ethereum’s validator community often prioritizes long-term network integrity. The Foundation continues to refine staking incentives to balance financial appeal with systemic security.

Community Building Over Hype

Unlike some rival chains that focus on rapid expansion and aggressive marketing, Ethereum maintains a community-first approach. According to Stanczak, the Foundation’s strategy is to foster organic growth, relying on open collaboration rather than top-down control.

Vitalik Buterin’s Subtle but Strategic Influence

Finally, Stanczak commented on Vitalik Buterin’s current role. Though less visible in daily operations, Buterin remains deeply influential, shaping Ethereum’s direction through thought leadership and a continued commitment to the network’s original ethos.

As Ethereum prepares for its next chapter, its strategy is rooted not in market trends but in a long-term vision for a scalable, decentralized future.
