Elon Musk has advocated for the removal of transatlantic trade tariffs and the establishment of a free trade area between North America and Europe. Speaking at a gathering organized by Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini of Italy, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla promoted “a zero-tariff situation” between the US and the EU, highlighting the necessity of greater regional labor mobility and economic integration.

“I hope it is agreed that both Europe and the United States should move, ideally, in my view, to a zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America,” Musk stated.

In keeping with the larger ideas of globalization, he also emphasized the significance of allowing for more unrestricted travel across the regions.

Musk’s support for free trade stands in stark contrast to the newly announced tariff strategy of President Donald Trump. Trump levied broad tariffs on almost all U.S. trading partners on April 2, including a 20% tax on a few European Union items. The action is thought to be a component of a larger protectionist plan to balance trade deficits.

In a pointed critique of Trump’s economic advisor Peter Navarro, one of the architects of the administration’s trade policy, Musk said, “A PhD in Econ from Harvard is a bad thing, not a good thing. Results in the ego/brains >>1 problem.” Harvard-trained economist Navarro brushed Musk’s comments aside, accusing the billionaire of protecting his own financial interests.

The European Union is putting together a $28 billion package of specific responses targeted at U.S. goods as the tariff dispute intensifies. In the upcoming days, the bloc is anticipated to complete its plan and put up a united front against the assertive U.S. tariff policy.
