The Head Privacy Commissioner of Canada is investigating AI company, and similar action may be considered by watchdogs in Germany, France, Ireland, and Spain.
The developers of the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT, OpenAI, are the subject of an investigation by Canada’s privacy commissioner for suspected unauthorized gathering and use of personal data.
On April 4, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) announced that a complaint from an unnamed person prompted its investigation.
Philippe Dufresne, the head of Canada’s privacy commissioner, said his office is closely monitoring AI technology to make sure Canadian privacy rights are adequately safeguarded.
The OPC made no other remarks and did not indicate a ban on Canadians’ access to ChatGPT. Canada’s investigation comes as Germany, France, Ireland and Spain eye possible action on AI following a temporary block on ChatGPT in Italy.
